How to Get an Accurate Handyman Quote from a Photo

Exactly what to photograph and write so a handyman can give you a flat price without a visit, with examples for drywall, TVs, decks, gates and gutters.

Short answerTo get an accurate quote from a photo, send two photos per job (one close-up, one from farther back), something for scale like a tape measure, and one line on what you want done. Add your neighborhood and timing. With that, we can price most small and mid-size jobs without a visit and reply within one business day.

Key takeaways

  • Send a close-up and a wide shot of each job.
  • Put a tape measure, coin or hand in the close-up for scale.
  • Write one line: what's wrong and what you want.
  • Add your neighborhood or ZIP and your timing.
  • Use our Photo Quote Builder to write the text for you.

Why do photos work for most jobs?

Most small jobs are visible from the outside: the size of a hole, the condition of a deck, the hinge side of a gate. Frank has done these jobs often enough to price them from good photos. When a photo can't show enough, such as rot you can't see the end of, we offer a free on-site estimate instead.

When does a photo quote not work?

  • Hidden damage, like water stains with an unknown source.
  • Large or mixed jobs, like a whole rental turnover.
  • Anything that might need a permit or a licensed trade; we tell you up front.

What does a good text look like?

Hi Frank, Hartland 40515. Two jobs: 1) doorknob hole in hallway drywall, about 4 in., smooth wall (photos attached). 2) back gate sags and won't latch, wood fence. Flexible on timing. Thanks!

How it works

What happens after you text us a photo?

We call this the Photo-to-Flat-Price Method. It is how most of our jobs start, and it means you know the price before any work begins.

  1. Text a photo. Send a clear photo and one line about the job to (859) 438-2150. Add a second photo from farther back so we can see the whole area.
  2. Get a flat price. We reply within one business day with one flat price for the job, or an hourly estimate if the job can't be judged from a photo.
  3. Pick a time. Reply to book, or book online. Bigger jobs get a free on-site estimate first.
  4. We do it right. Frank does the work himself. If a job turns out different from the photo, such as hidden rot, we stop and talk with you before doing any extra work.
  5. Pay your way, backed for a year. Pay by cash, card, Venmo, Zelle, PayPal, Cash App or Apple Pay. Labor on every job is guaranteed for one year.
